TSA Manpower issues cause long delay at Sea Tac Airport

Thousands of people were delayed in TSA security lines at Sea-Tac airport all day Sunday in what an airport spokesman called, "one of the worst days ever."

The reason: manpower issues with TSA. Passengers on Twitter complained of delays just getting in to the checkpoints of up to 90 minutes. The airport confirmed many of the reports were true.

“Sunday was unacceptable, this is not the customer service we want to see,” Port of Seattle spokesman Perry Cooper told KOMO News.

According to Jeff Holmgren, TSA Federal Security Director for Washington, there were a number of reasons all combined that led to the delays.

“Passenger volumes exceeded TSA’s screening capacity,” he said, and there just where not enough Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) on duty.

That stems from a "shortage of certified TSO’s to work in the security checkpoints" because TSA has seen an “unprecedented TSO hiring challenge."

There have been hiring fairs and well-publicized efforts by TSA nationwide to recruit people to become TSO’s, but now Sea-Tac is feeling the pain of that shortage.

Sunday’s delays were also due to a, "slight shortage of explosive detection canines to work in the security checkpoints due to injuries.”

Those injuries were to both the dogs or their handlers. The type of injuries are unknown but a spokesperson for TSA says they did not involve any interaction with passengers.

Cooper said airport staff is working with TSA to improve the speed of the lines.

During the summer of 2017, Cooper said the airport was able to keep an average wait time in line down to 20 minutes or less. But this year, the airport expects passenger traffic to increase by 5 percent. It's unknown if TSA staffing has been increased to match the expected influx.

Over the last year, Sea-Tac got a commitment from the TSA Director of 10 bomb sniffing dogs. The dogs play a critical role in speeding up the security lines.
